TINGOG Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre has been named as commissioner of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2), replacing former Negros Occidental representative Jose Francisco Benitez, who became the director-general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

Edcom 2 is the national body responsible for conducting an “in-depth assessment and evaluation of the Philippine education system’s overall performance.”

In a statement, Acidre said he is “honored to take on the responsibility” as Edcom 2 commissioner.

“The future of our nation hinges on a well-educated citizenry, and Edcom 2 will play a crucial role in ensuring that our education system adapts to the needs of our rapidly changing world,” Acidre added.

The commission is focusing on addressing issues such as access, quality and the alignment of education to global standards, and efforts to identify gaps in the current system and proposing reforms that enhance learning outcomes and teacher quality, aiming to make the education sector more responsive to national development goals.

Acidre’s appointment comes with his advocacy for education, co-authoring several measures with Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda Romualdez to improve educational access and quality.

Among those measures are the Local Universities and Colleges Governance Act, the Equitable Access to Math and Science Education Act, the Geographically Isolated Disadvantaged Conflict-Inflicted Areas and All Roads to All Learners Act, and the State Universities and Colleges Mental Health Service Act.

Acidre said that the focus now was on increasing access, improving the quality of education and ensuring that it is aligned with the skills and competencies needed in today’s world.

“This is a pivotal moment for us to re-imagine education in the Philippines. We are building the foundation for an education system that not only meets but exceeds global standards,” Acidre added.
