PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday led the distribution of P65,197,500 in financial aid to 8,693 fisherfolk and their families in Navotas City who were affected by the oil spill from the three tankers that sank off Bataan in July.
The Office of the President increased the cash aid from P5,000 to P7,500 for each of the beneficiaries.
Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco and Rep. Toby Tiangco thanked the President for the assistance to the affected fisherfolk, whose livelihood has been disrupted not only by oil spill but by typhoons and the southwest monsoon.

Other fisherfolk will receive their cash aid on September 19 and 20.
Congressman Tiangco cited the Marcos administration’s commitment to assisting those most in need.
“It’s not only in Metro Manila but nationwide that our fellow countrymen have been benefiting from the national government’s pro-poor programs like the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers, Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation and AKAP,” he said.
This year, 10,541 Navoteños benefited from the AKAP program, the city government said.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) also provided livelihood assistance such as post-harvest materials, capacity-building and fuel subsidies.
The BFAR distributed 50 bottom-set gill nets and fish processing utensils.
The Office of Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez also donated 10 kilograms of rice to each of the beneficiaries.
The President vowed action against government officials found to be accountable for the oil spill incident.
“As far as the investigation goes, we are not stopping until we find the answer: Are these ships involved in oil smuggling? How come two of the boats, despite not having licenses, have sailed out to sea?” he said.
