Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 horror-comedy classic “Beetlejuice” opens in Philippine cinemas today.
Titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the film welcomes new characters and a fresh cast, including Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaborative nature of the project in an interview, Burton said, “It’s like we’re doing this thing that nobody really knows what we’re doing – and within that framework, everybody is trying to make it something. So it was a joy to be on the set and go, ‘Hey, try this. Try that.’ And they all tried stuff.”
Ortega, who plays Astrid Deetz, the rebellious teenage daughter of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), shared her excitement about joining the “Beetlejuice” family. “I’ve done this a couple times now, where I’ve joined a franchise that I never pictured myself joining,” said Ortega. She added, “It was such a privilege… I got to work with one of my favorite directors again, which is incredible.” Ortega previously worked with Burton on the hit series “Wednesday.”
The film’s plot centers around the Deetz family’s return to Winter River following a family tragedy. Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, discovers a model of the town in the attic and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, setting off a series of events that lead to the return of the mischievous demon Beetlejuice, played once again by Michael Keaton.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” with a screenplay by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, promises to deliver the same quirky humor and supernatural chaos that made the original a cult favorite. Distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company, the film promises to be a thrilling return to the bizarre world of Beetlejuice.
