WITH nearly 23,000 residents voting in a plebiscite on Saturday, the Philippines’ biggest barangay (village), Bagong Silang, located in Caloocan City, will be divided into six villages.
Reports from the city’s Public Information Office showed that 22,854 residents of Barangay 176 or Bagong Silang voted to ratify Republic Act 11993, the law authorizing the division of the biggest barangay into six smaller ones.
Only 2, 584 of the residents voted against the jurisdictional division of Barangay 176.
The new villages will be known as Barangay 176-A, 176-B, 176-C, 176-D, 176-E and 176-F.
Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo Malapitan told The Manila Times on Sunday that he and his father, 1st District Rep. Oscar “Oca” Malapitan, strongly pushed for the division of Bagong Silang to make the delivery of services more efficient and to pave the way for “opportunities for growth.”
Mayor Malapitan thanked the Commission on Elections for the successful conduct of the plebiscite, saying that the city government would be coordinating with the poll body “at the soonest possible time” for the appointment of qualified barangay officials.
“Majority of Barangay 176 residents have already spoken and they were just right because they would largely benefit in the long term as more and immediate services could reach them,” he said.
He assured the affected village residents that the city government would continue to provide basic services through the new barangay administrations.
