Student journalists from across the country were honored at the 9th Campus Press Awards held in Talisay City, Negros Occidental. The awards ceremony was part of The Spectrum Fellowship, a four-day event hosted by the Student Media Corps of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.
Themed “SENTINEL: Fortress of the Free Press,” the event featured plenary sessions led by industry experts on topics such as publication management, media security, and the role of campus press in fostering social consciousness, neutrality, impartiality, and contextualization.
Discussions also covered press freedom violations and the implications of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as art and photography’s roles in political action and social justice.
The conference culminated in the Campus Press Awards, which recognized outstanding contributions from various student publications.
The Benildean Press Corps, representing the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, secured four awards. The Benildean: Impulse won Best Magazine and Best Magazine Layout for its special 25th anniversary edition. The publication addressed decision-making influenced by fleeting emotions. Dissecting the Oversaturation of Propaganda from the same magazine was named Best Editorial, highlighting the clash between hyper-partisan influencers and the fragile truth.
Shades of Gray: Crossroads earned second place for Best Literary Folio, exploring life-changing decisions and their impacts. The organization’s yearbook, Ad Astra, was recognized for Best Facebook Page, while its frosh publication, EMBARK 9, won second place for Best Magazine Layout.
Other notable awardees included The Dolphin of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, Inc. (Second Best Magazine and Third Best Magazine Layout); Phoenix of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas (Best Literary Folio, Third Best Facebook Page, and Third Best Magazine); and Tolentine Star of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (Third Best Literary Folio).
Additional awards went to The Central Echo of Central Philippine University (Second Best Editorial), The Weekly Sillimanian of Silliman University (Third Best Editorial), and FORWARD Publications of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (Second Best Facebook Page).
