The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Monday said its regional office in Central Visayas has launched a motu proprio investigation into the alleged sexual advances of a teacher on his two minor students in Cebu City.
In a statement, the CHR expressed concern on the incident, saying its Region 7 office is now conducting a probe in coordination with the family of the victims and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The teacher, who is now facing complaints lodged by the parents of two students, reportedly bit the victims. The teacher allegedly also asked his students, 14 years old and 17 years old, to take off their shirts so he could see their abs.
“The Commission denounces any form of sexual advances, inappropriate conduct, or innuendos, especially when directed at children, and particularly within institutions of learning where safety and trust should prevail. Such acts are even more alarming when they involve teachers, who are entrusted with the care and education of their students,” the commission said.
The CHR also said that it is ready to provide support and assistance to the students and their families.
It also vowed to ensure that violations towards children will be met “with the full force of the law.”
“While we recognize that some may be hesitant to seek legal remedies due to concerns about possible repercussions, we strongly encourage those affected to take action. Holding individuals accountable is essential to ensuring justice and preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future,” it added.
The Department of Education has been informed of the incident while the school is conducting its own investigation. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
