“There is no other way for our nation to be great unless we help our MSMEs scale up. If they scale up, they can create more jobs, and with more jobs, the Philippine economy will grow faster,” he said.
Concepcion was given the award alongside Greg Nathan, founder of the Franchise Relationships Institute.
The award recognizes and celebrates homegrown and international franchise brands that epitomize excellence in business growth and ethical business practices and have significantly contributed to the success and growth of the Philippine franchising sector, according to PFA’s website.
The PFA last conferred the award in 2019. Previous awardees include Philippine Stock Exchange Chairman and former trade secretary Jose Pardo, Employers Confederation of the Philippines Chairman Sergio Ortiz-Luis, and institutions PLDT Inc., Bank of the Philippines Islands and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Over a decade ago, Concepcion founded Go Negosyo, the advocacy arm of the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, in an effort to empower the Filipino entrepreneurial and innovative mindset through mentorship and entrepreneurship education for MSMEs.
The president and chief executive officer of RFM Corp. also sits on the board of Concepcion Industries Inc., founded by his father and namesake, Jose Concepcion Jr., more popularly known by his moniker “Joecon.”
The La Salle University-educated businessman philanthropist was recognized as among the 50 richest men in the Philippines, with a net worth of about $174 million as of 2020.
Concepcion was conferred in 2018 the Padma Shri award, the highest civilian honor given by India for his work in trade and industry.
The Go Negosyo founder was designated presidential adviser for entrepreneurship by former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2005 and again by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2016.
Under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., he was named chairman of the jobs committee of the Private Sector Advisory Council.
Concepcion was also appointed by Marcos as a member to represent Luzon at the DTI’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council, the agency responsible for the promotion, growth, and development of MSMEs in the Philippines.
