MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday described as “good news” the decision of the Metro Manila Council to adopt a policy prohibiting swimming and playing in floodwaters, to address the risk of leptospirosis and other diseases associated with the rainy season.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said the council has issued a resolution banning playing, wading and bathing in floods.

“But if you wade in floodwaters to save your house or your relatives, that is not prohibited,” Herbosa told Malacañang reporters.

The city government of San Juan, Herbosa said, has a policy imposing fines on children and adults swimming in floodwaters.

“It is costly to have leptospirosis. You have to be admitted in the ICU (intensive care unit) and you may die,” Herbosa said.

About 30 people have died of leptospirosis since Aug. 30, the DOH said.

Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority approved a regulation barring Metro Manila residents from swimming in floodwaters for fun.
