MANILA, Philippines — Rights group Karapatan has called for the release of an environmental activist who was allegedly seized by unidentified men in Tabaco, Albay on Aug. 28.

Karapatan reported that Felix Salaveria Jr., 66, founding member of Recycling Advocates, was seized five days after the disappearance of James Jazmines, brother of National Democratic Front of the Philippines consultant Alan Jazmines.

The group said Salaveria recently celebrated his birthday with his friends, including James, who disappeared shortly after the event on Aug. 23.

Salaveria is known for advocating eco-waste management and alternative waste disposal methods in Tabaco.

He maintained a small community garden at his home in Barangay Cobo, and has been actively involved in local environmental initiatives.

Karapatan said Salaveria’s family has expressed concern over his health conditions.

Relatives said Salaveria suffered a stroke in 2023, which paralyzed the left side of his body, and has been undergoing treatment at a clinic in Tabaco.

Karapatan is calling for the immediate release of Salaveria and other victims of enforced disappearances, saying they have to be reunited safely with their families
