MANILA, Philippines — The La Mesa Dam in Quezon City and Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan overflowed on Wednesday due to the incessant rains spawned by Severe Tropical Storm “Enteng” and enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
Personnel opened one control gate of the Ipo Dam in a bid to release rainwaters in small amounts.
Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Administrator, told The Manila Times that the dam gate was unlocked and started to release 0.90 millimeters of excess water.
“We have always been alerting the concerned local government units and villages a day or several hours before the gates are opened to get them prepared,” Servando said.
Also, hydrologist Edgar dela Cruz told the Times that La Mesa has breached its spilling level of 80.15 m.
He said the excess water from the La Mesa, which does not have control gates like other major dams, would flow through Tullahan River.
Pagasa hydrologists are also closely monitoring the water level of the Magat Dam in Isabela province where the water level was measured at 184.61 m or a deviation of -5.39m from its normal high water level of 190m.
