THE Malabon City government issued a cease-and-desist order against a private garbage hauling firm for improper and unsanitary use of a waste transfer facility.
Metrowaste Solid Waste Management Corp. (MSWMC) was ordered to halt its operations in Barangay Panghulo following complaints from residents.
“The order was issued after our city legal office received no response from MSWMC to several notices it sent regarding the complaints of residents, including foul odor, stockpiled garbage directly dumped on the ground, delayed garbage collection on streets and major roads, and unsanitary conditions within the area,” City Administrator Alex Rosete said.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said MSWMC was still permitted to collect garbage in 21 villages.
“They could still use the transfer station for parking and dispatching of their trucks before the collected garbage is brought to an identified sanitary dumpsite,” Sandoval said on Wednesday
Part of the company’s agreement with the city government was to ensure waste segregation and that no waste would be dumped on the ground.
“However, investigation conducted by the city government showed that stockpiles of unsegregated waste were dumped/left on the ground within the vicinity of the transfer station, which is unsanitary and a clear violation of the agreement,” Sandoval said.
Investigation conducted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office found that MSWMC has no proper drainage and water treatment facility that were crucial to proper waste management.
