Authorities raised the first alarm in Marikina River late Thursday morning amid the continuous rain caused by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

In a post on Facebook, the Marikina City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said the first alarm was raised at 10:40 a.m. after water level in the river reached 15 meters.

First alarm means residents should prepare for possible evacuation.

Second alarm, which is declared when water reaches the 16-meter level, means residents are advised to evacuate. A declaration of third alarm, done when water level reaches 18 meters, means forced evacuation.

Marikina City was among the areas in Metro Manila that suspended classes in all levels on Thursday due to the inclement weather. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
