THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) actively participated in the opening ceremony of the 25th National Maritime Week held at the Philippine Coast Guard Headquarters in Manila on Sept. 22, 2024.

With the theme “Marinong Filipino: Ligtas na Paglalayag!” (Filipino Seafarer: Safe Voyage!), the Philippine Coast Guard and Stella Maris-Philippines, supported by Marina `and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), hosted this year’s weeklong celebration, concluding on September 27. The event also commemorates the 29th National Seafarers’ Day on September 29.

Following a Holy Mass and opening program, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in Manila Bay to honor Filipino seafarers who lost their lives while serving as “modern-day heroes” of the country. Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan, other officials and bereaved families of seafarers attended the ceremony.

Officials present at the wreath-laying included PCG Commandant Adm. Ronnie Gavan, Assistant Secretary for Sea-based OFW Concerns Jerome Pampolina, Stella Maris Manila Port chaplain Fr. Paulo Prigol, and PPA Port Police Department Manager Genaro Mancio Jr.

The maritime community has prepared a week of activities to recognize the hard work and dedication of Filipino seafarers and highlight the significant contribution of the maritime industry to the country’s overall economy.
