MAYNILAD Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) said Tuesday that subsidiary Philippine Hydro Inc. (PhilHydro) had spent P50 million for the rehabilitation of the Legazpi City Water Treatment Plant in Albay.
The upgrade involved the inclusion of clarifier technology to facilitate the removal of sediments from raw water, making the treatment process faster and more efficient.
With this, Maynilad said the facility can sustain its production output of 30 million liters per day even during the rainy season when the level of turbidity in raw water supply increases.
“The increased turbidity of the river water, exacerbated by man-made activities upstream and soil erosion during heavy rains, necessitate this additional water treatment process,” PhilHydro general manager Mirla de Leon said.
“The upgraded facility will ensure consistent water quality and supply, even under these challenging conditions,” she added.
This project was said to be in line with the firm’s initiative to address the impact of climate change on raw water supply coming from the Yawa and Pawa rivers, which serve as the supply source of Legazpi City.
PhilHydro has a 25-year contract with the Legazpi City Water District.
It also owns and operates water treatment plants at the Norzagaray Water District, Santa Maria Water District and Bocaue Water District in Bulacan, and also supplies water to Bambang and Rizal in Nueva Ecija.
All its facilities are under public-private partnership contracts with the government.
