A NATIONWIDE bamboo planting activity and a municipal ordinance institutionalizing the implementation of the pliant tree for biodiversity conservation were among the highlights of the National Bamboo Month celebration recently held in Nueva Vizcaya.
The plans were laid out by key stakeholders who converged at the Provincial Bamboo Industry Development Council meeting in Bayombong and were led by the province’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). About 40 participants represented the provincial and municipal local government units, bamboo associations and other partner agencies.
Michael Paggabao, DTI Nueva Vizcaya provincial director, said that the initiatives laid out during the meeting intended to boost the bamboo industry’s growth and sustainability, leading to climate change mitigation and more livelihood opportunities.
Meanwhile, the upland municipality of Kasibu established the growth of bamboo to help protect environmental ecosystems and enhance projects that enhance soil and water quality. These projects are designed to intensify the protection of the town’s natural resources and raise the standard of living of the constituents
Other activities to be promoted under the ordinance include the preparation of a Bamboo Development Plan, the establishment of nurseries and plantations, the formation of partnerships and linkages with government agencies, academe, nongovernmental organizations and other private sectors, and support for bamboo-related businesses and their bamboo development value chain.
