AUSTRALIA and the Philippines have identified ways to bolster cyber cooperation as Canberra raised the need to build Manila’s cyber resilience.
Australian Ambassador to Manila Hae Kyong Yu said Australia “is keeping our word as the Philippines’ strategic partner.”
“Your security is our security,” Yu posted on X on Saturday.
Yu said that Australia’s Cyber and Critical Tech Ambassador Brendan Dowling visited Manila last week “to identify practical ways to bolster cyber cooperation with the Philippines after signing an MoU (memorandum of understanding) in February.”
Dowling on Friday posted on X said that he visited Manila to turn the MoU on cyber cooperation between the two countries “into a plan of action.”
“The Philippines is one of Australia’s closest partners in the region and is facing immense cybersecurity challenges,” he said on Saturday.
Dowling said “businesses and people have embraced digital tech, but scams and ransomware are rife.”
“Cybercrime has hit government, industry and the community. State and state-linked cyber threat actors are targeting their capabilities in the Philippines,” he said.
The Philippines “is at the frontline of geo-strategic challenges, and these are playing out in cyberspace. We need to stand with the Philippines and build its cyber resilience,” Dowling said.
“We committed to practical cooperation, including training, exercising and threat info sharing. We’ll also help to build technical capabilities and support threat detection and response,” he said.
