The Philippines’ Rebecca Chuaunsu won the Best Actress award for her role in “Her Locket” at the Wu Wei Taipei International Film Festival 2024 on September 1. The ceremony was held at the Westar Theater in Ximending, Taipei.

In her acceptance speech, Chuaunsu opened with greetings in Chinese and proceeded to say, “Magandang gabi sa inyong lahat. I’m an actress and producer from the Philippines.”

Chuaunsu reflected on her personal connection to Taiwan, recalling that she held a Taiwanese passport until the day before her wedding but waited 11 years, all the same, for then-President Ferdinand Marcos to declare her a naturalized Filipino.

Filipina actress and producer is victorious on Sunday’s Wu Wei Taipei International Film Festival.

“So, tonight, it’s very, very humbling, an honor, and a privilege to accept this award in my home country, Taipei, Taiwan, and also in front of my kababayan,” she said.

“Her Locket,” an autobiographical film about family conflicts and inheritance issues, has gained international attention, having participated in several film festivals, including Marche Du Film at Festival De Cannes (2023) in France, the London East Asia International Film Festival (2023) in the UK, and the 22nd Dhaka International Film Festival (2024) in Bangladesh.

The film’s logline reads: “With the aid of a locket necklace, a Chinese woman suffering from dementia is able to gradually recall memories from her past.”

Chuaunsu’s win in Taiwan marks her second Best Actress award, following her victory at the 2023 Festival International du Film Transsaharien de Zagora in Morocco for her portrayal of Jewel Ouyang.

“This prestigious recognition truly highlights her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft. Rebecca’s powerful portrayal and her commitment to storytelling have resonated with audiences and judges alike, and we couldn’t be prouder of her achievement,” read a post from Rebecca Chuaunsu Film Production on Facebook.

“Her Locket” will be featured at the Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival, which opens today and runs through September 8 at select cinemas.

Chuaunsu jokingly added in her speech, “You will see me there; I will give you popcorn and soft drinks.”
