THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is committed to maintaining drug-free ports through strict security measures, collaboration with anti-drug agencies and regular personnel drug testing.
PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago emphasized the agency’s alignment with the national strategy against illegal drugs.
Since January 2024, PPA port police have intercepted drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine (shabu) and marijuana in several ports, including Lucena, Masbate, Ozamiz, Jordan and Zamboanga. These substances were detected through baggage X-rays and physical inspections, with K-9 units patrolling the areas.

The seized drugs and suspects were handed to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the PNP Maritime for investigation.
“We have not stopped supporting the government’s anti-drug campaign, and we work closely with agencies like the PDEA,” said Santiago.
PPA also conducts random drug tests on its personnel to uphold the “Drug-Free Workplace Policy” in collaboration with the PDEA and under regulatory standards.
“Surprise drug testing maintains our employees’ integrity and ensures a clean, service-oriented environment,” Santiago said.
The PPA has also bolstered its security by adding 31 newly trained port police officers to various port management offices, reinforcing its commitment to global standards of safety and order.
