MANILA, Philippines — Former vice president Ma. Leonor Robredo will be running as mayor of Naga City in next year’s elections, the Liberal Party (LP) announced.

The party’s executive vice president, former representative Erin Tañada made the announcement during the party’s National Executive Council (NECO) meeting on Friday.

Labor leader Sonny Matula, who was also in the NECO meeting of the LP, told The Manila Times on Viber that the party’s leaders told him of Robredo’s candidacy as mayor.

Robredo, who served as country’s second highest official from 2016 to 2022, is currently the chairman of the non government organization (NGO) Angat Buhay, which was launched after her presidential bid in 2022.

Meanwhile, her running mate, former senator Francis Pangilinan, the party’s current chairman, will make a comeback bid for the Senate in the upcoming polls.

According to Matula on his X platform, Pangilinan, along with human rights lawyer Jose Manuel Diokno and former senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, is the LP’s slate in the 2025 elections. Diokno recently joined the Akbayan Party of Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who also endorsed the trio.

Matula is also running for senator himself, under the Workers Party Philippines. He previously ran under the LP, which had Robredo and Pangilinan as its president and vice presidential candidates in 2022.

Meanwhile, Tañada will run alongside former representative Teddy Baguilat and former senator Leila de Lima under the LP’s sectoral Mamamayang Liberal (ML) partylist.
