House Speaker Martin Romualdez is expected to attend the highly anticipated Liga Day in Iloilo on September 15 at the Iloilo Sports Complex, where he is set to be one of the guests of honor.
The event is expected to draw over 12,000 barangay officials from across the province. It is organized by the Liga ng mga Barangay-Iloilo Chapter, whose president, Amalia Deboque, said they are currently awaiting Romualdez’s confirmation as the invitation has already been sent to his office.
This annual gathering serves as a platform for barangay officials to strategize on improving their services. The 2024 theme, “Connecting Barangays, Shaping Tomorrows,” highlights the importance of collaboration among local communities.
The celebration stands out as it extends across an entire month, featuring various activities leading up to the culminating event, Liga Day 2024. Festivities kicked off on August 6 and include the launch of Barangay Aid on Wheels, a sports fest, and a cheers and yells competition.
In addition to Romualdez, other prominent officials expected to attend are Liga National President Jessica Dy, Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar, Sen. Francis Tolentino, Sen. Imee Marcos, and Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr.
Other expected attendees include Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., 1st District Rep. Janette Garin, 2nd District Rep. Michael Gorriceta, 3rd District Rep. Lorenz Defensor, 4th District Rep. Ferjenel Biron, and 5th District Rep. Raul Tupas.
Deboque advised motorists to expect heavy traffic around the sports complex due to the large turnout. Her office has already held two meetings with the Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office and the City Police Office to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the event.
