Cardiologist and 2022 vice presidential candidate Willie Ong, who revealed his cancer diagnosis over the weekend, has expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s healthcare system.
“I wish to help all Filipinos with cancer and other serious illnesses. I consider myself very, very lucky because I have good medical care and loving relatives beside me,” Ong posted on social media.
“But what stresses, angers, and hurts me the most is that I know millions of Filipinos can never avail of such treatment. I cry for this injustice,” he added.
He then said if he recovers from his 16-centimeter sarcoma, he “will spend the rest of (his) remaining days fighting and lobbying for our poor countrymen.”
“Finally, even if you bash and hurt me, I will still help you. My love for all Filipinos is unconditional. May God give me the chance to prove it to you once and for all,” Ong wrote.
Netizens have since interpreted the doctor’s post as a possible hint of plans to run for office in the coming elections.
He previously attributed his cancer diagnosis to stress from reading the comments of “bashers” in the 2022 elections.
