Gates at five different dams in Luzon have been opened to release water as Severe Tropical Storm Kristine continued to bring heavy rains on Thursday morning, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
As of 8 a.m., two gates were open at Binga Dam at 1.00 meter, discharging water at 116.44 cubic meters per second (CMS).
The dam, which is located in Benguet province, had a 570.83 meters reservoir water level (RWL), down from Wednesday’s 573.00 meters. It has a 575-meter normal high water level (NHWL).
Ambuklao Dam, which is also in Benguet, also has one gate open at 0.50 meters, releasing water at 73.77 CMS.
It has a 749.20-meter RWL and a 752-meter NHWL.
Meanwhile, one gate remained open at Magat Dam—located between Ifugao and Isabela—at 2.00 meters, freeing water at 300.00 CMS.
Magat Dam, which has a 193-meter NHWL, has 182.81 RWL, slightly higher than the 182.28 meters on Wednesday.
One gate was also opened at San Roque Dam in Pangasinan at 0.50 meters to release water at 53.90 CMS.
Its RWL decreased from 275.98 meters to 275.79 meters, while its NHWL was at 280 meters.
Ipo Dam in Bulacan also has one gate open at 0.30 meters, releasing 47.90 CMS of water.
It has a 100.79 RWL, close to its 101.10 NHWL.
Last Wednesday, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ordered concerned agencies to closely monitor dams in anticipation of the onslaught of Tropical Storm Kristine in Luzon.
The President said he prefers the gradual release of water from dams to avoid severe flooding of downstream communities.
As of 8 a.m., Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 was raised over 16 areas in Luzon as Severe Tropical Storm Kristine moved to the Cordillera Administrative Region.
A total of 20 people were reportedly killed in Bicol Region due to Kristine, according to the Police Regional Office 5. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
