Can you still remember the first song you listened to on Spotify when it was first introduced here in the Philippines over a decade ago? I could still remember mine: the classic, all-time favorite OPM “Kung Wala Ka” by Hale.
During those 10 years, I listened to it like it was part of my routine. The effort came into fruition as Spotify Philippines awarded “Kung Wala Ka” as one of the tracks with hundreds of million streams in a recent event, alongside Moira De la Torre, Zack Tabudlo, IV Of Spades, Arthur Nery, among others.
Marking its 10th year in the country, Spotify Philippines gathered music artists in the local scene of different generations to celebrate Original Pilipino Music (OPM).
During the Spotify Lounge: Philippine Edition, Kossy Ng, Head of Music for Spotify Southeast Asia recalled the first time Spotify came into the Philippine shores and how Filipinos patronized the streaming platform throughout the years.
“It was quite emotional for me as I was part of the team that launched Spotify here in the Philippines. We were able to witness firsthand the tremendous growth in this market, especially in the local music scene,” said Ng.
In a span of 10 years, OPM continues to grow, reaching a more global audience and breaking barriers and borders regardless of genres and languages.
“Pinoy music continues to reach new fans across genres and borders. Spotify not only delivers an unparalleled, personalized music experience for listeners but also serves as the platform for artists to grow their audience and build deep connections with their fans,” she added.
“With an impressive 80% average growth in Pinoy artist global exports year-on-year, we remain dedicated to empowering Filipino talents and continue elevating Pinoy music on the global stage. I’m excited to bring their music to even more fans around the world,” Ng continued.
Sprify also introduced the Pinoy Music Hub is a part of the platform’s commitment to both listeners and artists. A space packed with the latest genre hits in Tatak Pinoy, KALYE, and P-Pop on the Rise, alongside timeless favorites from OPM Hits of the ‘80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s.
