THE Kingdom of Norway’s ambassador to the Philippines, Christian Halaas Lyster, recently visited Davao Merchant Marine Academy (DMMA) College of Southern Philippines in Davao City, reaffirming the strong and enduring relationship between the two nations, particularly in the maritime sector.
Lyster was impressed by the college’s dedication to providing high-quality education and training to aspiring seafarers. DMMA College has been a key partner in the Norwegian Shipowners Association Program, producing skilled and competent maritime professionals who contribute significantly to the global shipping industry.
The Norwegian Training Center (NTC) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Manila have been conducting nationwide tours of maritime schools, including DMMA College, to further strengthen these partnerships. The college has been a partner school for the cadetship program since 2006, offering scholarships to deserving students.
Lyster was welcomed by the DMMA College community who showcased their skills through a silent drill performance. The students also had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the ambassador and representatives from NTC, discussing the future of the maritime industry and the role of Filipino seafarers.
The continued collaboration between Norway and the Philippines in the maritime sector is a testament to the trust and respect that have been built over the years. As the global shipping industry evolves, the partnership between these two nations is poised to play an even more vital role in shaping the future of maritime education and employment.
