Afternoon face-to-face classes have been suspended in Balayan, Batangas on Thursday due to vog brought about by the most recent activity of Taal Volcano.

In a post on Facebook, the local government of Balayan said the suspension of afternoon face-to-face classes was based on the recommendation of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

The suspension covered all levels, both in public and private schools.

“Online classes and modular learning are being encouraged as alternatives to regular face-to-face classes,” the local government said.

Residents were encouraged to wear facemasks when outdoors and remain attentive for forthcoming notifications for the following days.

According to PHIVOLCS on Thursday, a small two-minute phreatic eruption event was reported in Taal Volcano on Wednesday.

Phreatic eruptions are steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits, PHIVOLCS said.

A voluminous emission of plumes of up to 3,000 meters tall were observed from Taal Volcano, which drifted to the north-northwest and northeast directions. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
