Although the northern portion of Batanes has been downgraded to Signal No. 2, the province has yet to recover from the impact of Typhoon Leon after Signal No. 5 was raised on Wednesday.
According to Jun Veneracion’s report on “24 Oras” on Thursday, the impact of Leon is evident everywhere in Batanes.
In a video posted by the Batanes Provincial Police Office, the raging storm can be felt even from inside the headquarters.
Meanwhile, roaring sea waves also threatened the residents.
Several establishments also had to cover their windows and doors amid the strong winds.
Leon, the 12th storm to enter the country this year, left roads impassable in Basco due to fallen trees and debris.
Local authorities had to brave the rains to clear the roads.
The Santa Maria De Mayan Church, which was established by Dominican missionaries in the 19th century, was also not spared from Leon’s rage.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development said that there are still 2,000 family food packs available in Batanes. It will deliver 5,000 more food packs once the weather permits traveling again.
Leon batters Ilocos Norte, Mountain Province
Typhoon Leon also caused storm surges in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte which forced the residents to bring their belongings to higher places.
The strong winds of the typhoon also destroyed houses in Pasuquin.
Meanwhile, the inclement weather caused power interruption in Bauko, Mountain Province after a tree branch fell into the electric line.
Restoration works were immediately administered by the local electric cooperative. —Vince Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
