Two South Korean fugitives were apprehended by agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in separate operations in Luzon.
According to the BI, its fugitive search unit (FSU) arrested 42-year-old Choi Jonguk in a popular entertainment area in Parañaque on October 12, at least five years since his inclusion in the Immigration wanted list.
Choi has been in the BI wanted list since 2019 after he was charged with operating an illegal gambling website that catered to Korean customers who bet on the results of sports competitions. The foreigner allegedly made money by selling sports betting tickets online in violation of South Korea’s national sports promotion act.
Meanwhile, Immigration officials likewise announced the arrest of Seo Jungchul, 37, in Angeles City, Pampanga for being an undesirable alien.
Seo is wanted in South Korea over his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade. He is under the Interpol red notice and is subject of a deportation order issued in 2019 for being an undesirable alien. He is also found to be overstaying in the Philippines in an attempt to evade arrest and prosecution for his crimes in Korea.
A warrant for his arrest was reportedly issued by the Seoul Central District Court in 2017 after he was indicted for violating his country’s narcotics control act.
South Korean authorities alleged that Seo engaged in the purchase, consumption and trading of Philopon, a form of methamphetamine, which is a commonly abused drug substance in Korea.
Both foreigners are considered as undocumented aliens as their passports have already been revoked by their government.
They will be detained in the BI’s facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig while waiting for deportation. — Sundy Locus/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
