The crime rate for the period from January 1 to October 18 this year is 8.43% lower than in the same period last year, the Philippine National Police said, but homicide has ticked up.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said there were 152,024 crime incidents tallied during the period, down from 166,013 last year.

“So that would translate to 8.43% reduction or [fewer crimes by] 13,989,” she said.

Of the eight illegal acts classified by the PNP as “focus crimes”—murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, theft, robbery, car theft and motorcycle theft—only homicide has risen in the given period, while the rest declined.

“Yung theft, rape, physical injury, robbery, murder, carnapping of motor vehicle and motorcycle, lahat po iyan from January 1 to October 18 ay lahat po ay bumababa. Except sa kaso ng homicide na tumaas po ng 4.39%,” Fajardo said.

(Theft, rape, physical injury, robbery, murder, carnapping of motor vehicle and motorcycle, all decreased in the period from January 1 to October 18. Except in the case of homicide, which increased by 4.39%.)

Fajardo added that P18.9 billion worth of illegal drugs have been seized and over 47,000 suspects have been arrested in 39,153 police operations during the same period. — BM, GMA Integrated News
