US-based biotech giant Thermo Fisher Scientific announced plans to create more job opportunities for Filipino talents as it expands its presence in the Philippines.
The company is actively hiring for various roles at its new hub in Metro Manila, as it supports the growth of cutting-edge research, advanced manufacturing and high-quality service delivery in the country.
Thermo Fisher is committed to providing its employees with opportunities for professional growth, skill development and career advancement, said senior vice president for global business services Konrad Bauer.
“In the Philippines, we’re looking to establish a strong operational presence over the next few years, and our focus will be on prioritizing local talent and collaborating with research institutions and industry partners. We’ll measure our success not just by market growth, but also by our contributions to public health, environmental sustainability, and agricultural innovation both locally and regionally,’’ he said.
New hub
Thermo Fisher’s Global Services Center (GBSC) in Quezon City is expected to create over 450 jobs by the end of 2026.
Bauer said the company is building on its presence in the Philippines, where it has 1,400 colleagues working on clinical trials and commercial activities.
Thermo Fisher’s expansion in the Philippines partly contributes to the country’s growing reputation as a key destination for biotech innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Local stakeholders
By collaborating with local universities, research institutions and government agencies, the biotech company aims to support the development of the Philippines’ biotech industry.
“Our initiatives include working with local universities on STEM education and internships, teaming up with the government to support national science goals, and getting involved in community programs that promote science and technology,” Bauer said.
“Achieving great things rarely happens in isolation, so we’re committed to partnering with local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders to build a thriving biotech ecosystem in the Philippines,” he said.
The biotech firm revealed plans to engage with the local community through educational programs, internships and partnerships with non-profit organizations.
Key market
Bauer said the Philippines is an important market for Thermo Fisher Scientific, “and we consider it a crucial center for our growth in the APAC region. There are several factors that make it an ideal location for our new center.”
The Philippines’ skilled and adaptable workforce as well as its strategic position in Southeast Asia provides Thermo Fisher with easy access to various markets, enhancing its ability to effectively serve customers.
The rapidly growing biotech sector, supported by substantial investments and a favorable regulatory environment, also creates a vibrant landscape for innovation within the company.
Another significant advantage is the widespread proficiency in English, which facilitates communication and collaboration worldwide.
“Ultimately, we aim to create a vibrant ecosystem that supports our customers and empowers the local community, positioning the Philippines as a leading hub for biotech innovation in the APAC region,” Bauer said.
