Whoever said that after gossiping (i.e., “making” chismis or marites), the second most favorite pastime of Filipinos is to belt out on the videoke could well be mistaken. For if the sold-out ticket sales of two of Original Pilipino Music’s beloved artists, Ogie Alcasid and Ice Seguerra, when each cleverly took the concept to the concert stage are anything to go by, the Japanese invention, which this country turned into a cultural phenomenon, would unquestionably take first place. After all, aren’t we more prominently acknowledged as a country of singers rather than gossips? Heck, even Simon Cowell knows that whoever you are, that is wrong!
All the same, more proof is about to come whoever’s way, as the country’s Ultimate Singer-Songwriter, Ogie Alacasid, and OPM Acoustic icon, Ice Seguerra, respectively, reprise their hit videoke concerts this November.
If you’re a real Pinoy, there’s no choosing one or the other, especially given these two OPM royalties’ incomparable musical genius, easy but excellent sense of humor, and such endearing personalities that have made each one feel like a close friend or family through the years. We all gotta videoke with Ogie and Ice this November!
‘Ogieoke 2: Reimagined:’ Ogie’s hit songs with new sounds and the same magic
The 2023 sold-out concert “Ogieoke” at Resorts World Manila’s Newport Performing Arts Theater wasn’t planned — it was a happy accident born of a text message typo. Ogie Alcasid’s late and beloved manager, Leo Dominguez, inadvertently coined the catchy title when he tapped the words “Sige, Ogieoke,” when all he meant to say was “Sige, Ogie. OK.” And with Ogie’s love for the videoke (because what Filipino doesn’t), not to mention his playful and musical genius, he turned it into a full-blown, interactive experience that captivated audiences at a one-night-only performance in September last year.
“Filipinos love to sing, whether it’s videoke at home or a concert hall. It’s a way to celebrate, unwind, and feel connected,” he said of the show back then.
Now, here we are, forever fans of Ogie’s enduring music and his simply fun and funny personality, finally getting a much-awaited second round of “Ogieoke” come November 30 at the same posh but cozy venue. Yaay!
Understandably, it’s taken Ogie over a year to launch “Ogieoke 2: Reimagined” because the truly invested OPM president and staunch advocate of Filipino artists devoted much of 2024 to producing concerts for his fellow talents under his thriving A-Team company. Fresh from mounting ‘Concert King’ Martin Nievera’s uber-successful big concert venue comeback, “The King 4Ever,” last month, and excited for the much talked about Street Boys dance reunion, “SB90,” also happening this November, Ogie told The T-Zone at his press conference in Kamuning Bakery, “I have to say, producing, especially for Martin, was a wonderful journey. I just love Martin. I believe in him, and I think he deserves an Araneta concert, which turned out fantastic.
“Then there’s the Street Boys dance reunion,” he continued, adding how he’s learned so much from being on the other side of the equation and is grateful so far that despite all the challenges that come with it, his business instincts seem to be on the right track.
“Obviously, I’m a fan of Martin and the Street Boys because I like producing concerts that I personally want to watch. And these are concerts, as you can see, that have nostalgia,” he acknowledged.
“Now, having said that, of course, my favorite is doing my own concert. So, from here on, until next year, we’re going back to doing more Ogie again,” he enthused.
Starting with “Ogieoke 2: Reimagined,” Ogie is set to showcase refreshed versions of his greatest hits with contemporary arrangements. “I’ll be singing reimagined versions of my songs, which explains the concert’s title,” he explained. “We have new arrangements for songs like ‘Nandito Ako,’ ‘Ako’y Iyong Iyo,’ ‘Mahal Kita, Walang Iba’ and ‘Dito sa Puso Ko,’ among others.”
The eternal videoke favorite duet, “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang,” will also be part of the repertoire, which Ogie will sing with no less than Maloy of the day’s hottest P-Pop girl group, Bini.
“Actually, all the girls will perform on the show. They’ll perform ‘Salamin,’ I think, and then my duet with Maloy.”
Asked how he managed to lock in the most in-demand music act of the moment, Ogie shared he’s always had a soft spot for the girls whom he witnessed growing up around ABS-CBN until catapulting to stardom and has been a sort of father figure to them.
“To be honest, they call me ‘ninong,'” Ogie laughed, revealing how they look to him as a godfather, especially after he once treated them to a shopping spree when they all performed for an “Asap” show in Toronto, Canada.
Besides Bini, he also has popular “Tawag ng Tanghalan” winners JM dela Cerna and Marielle Montellano as guests for “Ogieoke 2,” further boosting the youth factor of his show.
Humbled how new generation artists are always eager to work and collaborate with him [Bini will record an Ogie Alcasid composition titled “Sige, Galaw, Galaw,” early next year]; OPM’s iconic singer-songwriter credits their openness and willingness to learn from him as a critical factor in his ever-enduring career in Philippine showbiz. Simply put, such collaborations fuel his adaptability to transcend audiences and keep him relevant regardless of year.
For Ogie, this “reimagined” concert results from that adaptability and ultimately serves as a reflection of his professional journey and staying power in the industry.
“You have to keep going and keep evolving. I believe that if you love what you do and keep trying, you will get there and stay on.”
And so, before another fruitful and enduring year comes to a close in Ogie Alcasid’s storied career, he hopes that his multi-generation fan base will join him for a customary videoke celebration on November 30 at the NPAT as he promises to keep making — or reimagining — the music they want to hear, and, of course, sing with.
