RESCUERS raced Saturday to reach people still stranded in areas cut off by flooding from Tropical Storm “Kristine”, which has displaced nearly half a million people and killed at least 87, 43 from Batangas. Provincial officials said 18 of those deaths came from the village of Sampaloc in Talisay town, who were reported to have perished in a landslide Friday night. Batangas provincial police office director Col. Jack Malinao confirmed the retrieval of the 18 victims from the site of the landslide, including 12 children. Malinao said the death toll could rise further as they were still looking for missing people who were buried in the landslide. The incident occurred due to days of heavy rains brought by Kristine, which began affecting the province on Tuesday, October 22.

TROPICAL Storm Kong-Rey was expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, the state-run weather bureau said Saturday. The storm, named “Leon”, entered the PAR at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and it could reach typhoon status by Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

THE head of the Philippine Educational Publishers Association (PEPA) believes that the Department of Education (DepEd) is now looking at better quality books that would be used in the Matatag curriculum from private publishers. Speaking to the IBC public affairs program “The Chairman’s Report” with Commission for Filipinos Overseas secretary and former Manila Times chairman and CEO Dante Ang II on Friday. Jose Paulo Sibal, president of PEPA, said the DepEd is now discussing how to streamline the textbook procurement process. Sibal said that the DepEd will now implement some changes in the procurement once a textbook call is implemented in 2025 for 2026.

SPORTS: Madi Mojdeh strikes gold in Japan

Over to sports, the Behrouz Elite Swimming Team (BEST), led by Behrouz Mohammad Madi Mojdeh, showed its strength immediately, capturing a gold medal on the first day of competition at the 2024 Buccaneer Invitational Swimming Championships held at St. Mary’s International School swimming pool in Tokyo, Japan. Mojdeh dominated the boys’ 13-14 200-meter (m) breaststroke, recording an impressive two minutes and 35.63 seconds to secure the team’s first gold medal in the tournament. The Immaculate Heart of Mary College-Parañaque standout outpaced Japan bets Kenny Schamisso, who clocked 2:37.31 to settle for silver, and Ousei Fukuda, who finished far behind with 2:50.16 for the bronze medal.
