The Army’s 19th Infantry Battalion neutralized a high-ranking NPA commander in Northern Samar.
The Army identified the leader as Mario Sevillano, also known as “Durok,” who was part of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC).
According to the Army, Alyas Durok was wounded during an encounter with the 19IB and 4SRB on August 30, 2024.
He was subsequently evacuated by his comrades; however, he succumbed to his abdominal gunshot wounds and was buried in a shallow grave by retreating comrades in Brgy. Deit de Turag, Silvino Lubos, Northern Samar.
“This recent military success, along with the exhumation and proper burial of Sevillano’s remains, underscores the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ commitment to restoring peace and security while upholding human rights and dignity, even for those who once opposed it,” the Army stated.
Meanwhile, two members of Platoon 1, F15, SRC ARCTIC of EVRPC, known by their aliases Robert/Okyo and Dayay, surrendered to the military in Mapanas town.
Additionally, an NPA combatant identified as Alias Baronet turned himself in to the 19th Infantry Battalion in Brgy. Poponton, Las Navas, Northern Samar.
Baronet, a member of Squad 1, SRGU, SRC Emporium of EVRPC, surrendered without firearms and is now under the custody of the 19IB Headquarters in Brgy. Opong, Catubig, Northern Samar.
Brigadier General Perfecto Peñaredondo, Acting Commander of the 8th Infantry Division, lauded these surrenders as significant advancements in the military’s campaign against insurgency.
“Northern Samar continues to experience developmental gains as we make headway against the Communist Terrorist Group. Your Army remains committed to eradicating insurgency not only in the province but throughout Region 8,” Peñaredondo stated.
The government continues to urge remaining insurgents to surrender and take advantage of opportunities for reintegration into society as part of efforts to secure a safer and more peaceful future for Northern Samar.
