THE chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability said Monday there were two possible grounds to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte.

These were her actions as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and her use of funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President, said Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua.

Chua said Duterte could face impeachment for alleged graft and corruption.

“We want to know where the P15 million went,” he said in Filipino, noting that the certification from the Army was that it never received the funds. “Now the question is, where did it go?” Chua said.

He was referring to P15 million in confidential funds of the DepEd, which, based on testimony during the probe, was not used for a youth leadership summit (YLS) conducted in 2023.

The DepEd under Duterte had supposedly used certifications in connection with the YLS to justify the P15 million, which was supposedly used to pay informants.

But four people denied knowing that their certifications in connection with the YLS would be used to justify the use of the amount.

Chua added that there were no details on the P16 million allegedly used for safe houses. “We do not know if this was really used for rentals,” he said.

“Isn’t what Duterte did a betrayal of public trust?” he said. “Funds are entrusted to you, but you do not spend them in the way you should.”

Chua, however, said he did not want to make any conclusion yet since Duterte could still refute the allegations.

The Manila Times has sought but was unable to get a comment from Duterte or the OVP.

Last September, Duterte had accused lawmakers of making a case for impeachment.
