Magnitude 6.1 earthquake jolts Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the province of Catanduanes on Wednesday morning, state seismologists said.

Tectonic in origin, the tremor occurred around 5:19 a.m. some 81 kilometers northeast of Bagamanoc town, also in the province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It said that Intensity 4 was felt by residents in Virac, Catanduanes while Intensity 3 in Gatchitorena, Cabusao, Ragay, Gainza, Goa and Lagonoy, Camarines Sur; and Palapag, Laoang, Pambujan, San Roque and Mondragon, Northern Samar.

Meanwhile, Intensity 2 was felt in Paracale, Basud, Sipocot and San Vicente, Camarines Norte; Nabua, City of Iriga, Bombon, Calabanga, Camaligan, Canaman, Magarao, Ocampo, Pili, Tigaon, Tinambac, San Jose and Siruma, Camarines Sur; Gamay, Catarman, Bobon, San Jose, Lavezares, Allen, San Isidro, Victoria, Catubig and Las Navas, Northern Samar; and City of Calbayog, Samar; while Intensity 1 in Bulan and Irosin, Sorsogon; and Lope de Vega and Mapanas, Northern Samar.

Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded over Virac, Catanduanes; and City of Tabaco, Albay while Intensity 3 in Mercedes, Camarines Norte; Caramoan and Sagñay, Camarines Sur; and City of Sorsogon, Sorsogon while Intensity 2 in General Nakar, Quezon; City of Legazpi, Albay; Daet, Camarines Norte; Siruma, City of Iriga, Ragay and Sipocot, Camarines Sur; and San Roque, Northern Samar and Intensity 1 in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte; and City of Masbate and Claveria, Masbate.

Although aftershocks are possible from the latest Catanduanes earthquake, damage to infrastructure, however, is unlikely, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said.
