(UPDATE) THE Malabon City government has reopened the Tugatog Public Cemetery (TPC) which was closed in 2021 for renovation.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said that the city government has offered free cremation of the remains that were exhumed during the redevelopment of the cemetery.

City Administrator Alexander Rosete said the public cemetery had to be renovated because of its limited space.

“Actually, the redevelopment of the Tugatog Public Cemetery is still ongoing but we have to partially reopen it so that Malabon families would have the chance to visit their departed loved ones,” Rosete said.

Sandoval, who is seeking reelection, thanked the families whose loved ones were buried in the cemetery for their understanding and cooperation. The city government distributed consent forms to the families who wanted to avail of the free cremation of the remains of their deceased relatives at public cemetery.

Rosete said other families were given other options such as transferring the remains to the TPC’s ossuary or to other cemeteries or columbaria.

The City Health Department-Sanitation Division said that families of over 500 deceased availed of the free cremation package.

On Saturday, Sandoval and Rosete led other key city officials in inspecting the city’s public cemetery including its ossuary and columbarium and the Wall of Remembrance which was inaugurated in 2023.

The local government has started the construction of a two-story building with around 600 apartment tombs/niches to add more space at the public cemetery.
