MANILA, Philippines — Malacanang announced the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels in Luzon on Friday.
“Due to the raising of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in most areas of Luzon in view of the persistent intense rainfall and strong winds brought about by Severe Tropical Storm ‘Kristine,’ to further aid in the rescue, relief, and recovery efforts of the government, and upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, work in government offices and classes at all levels in Luzon are hereby suspended on 25 October 2024,” the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) said in a statement released on Thursday night.
The order, however, does not cover frontline agencies “involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services” and are hereby directed to continue their operations and render the necessary services.
Moreover, the localized cancellation or suspension of classes and/or work in government offices in other areas may be implemented by their respective local chief executives, pursuant to relevant laws, rules and regulations.
“The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads,” the OES further noted.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said that there were 10 reported deaths so far at the wake of the severe weather disturbance. The toll rose to 20 late Thursday.
Latest data from the NDRRMC, on the other hand, showed that the number of individuals affected by the typhoon has reached 2,077,643.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., meanwhile, assured that the government has “been tirelessly and urgently working towards the immediate deployment of relief, recovery, and rehabilitation amidst the severe devastation caused by Typhoon Kristine (Trami) in the Bicol Region,” the hardest hit by the typhoon.
