Michael Stephen Pacquiao, the 22-year-old son of boxing icon and reelectionist senator Manny Pacquiao, has filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for councilor of General Santos City.

He will run under the People’s Champ Movement, a local political party.

“I believe it’s time for the younger generation to take an active role in shaping our city’s future. I want to focus on education, youth empowerment, and sustainable development,” Michael said in a statement.

In an interview with GMA Regional TV’s One Mindanao, Michael asked what was the advice given to him by his father. Michael is the second child of the former senator.

He replied, “It is my decision naman, I have my own goals here … I was inspired by my dad to be involved in politics.”

Manny and his wife, Jinky, accompanied Michael in filing the COC.

The elder Pacquiao (PFP) is seeking reelection as part of the senatorial slate of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’ Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas.

Prior to his foray into politics, Michael ventured into hip-hop and rap music.

In a 2023 interview with GMA Integrated News podcast “Share Ko Lang”, Michael said his decision to become a musician took his parents by surprise.
