Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corp.’s (SMCC) fabrication yard for the Metro Manila Subway is operating at full capacity, producing 90 segments per day, or 15 tunnel rings, the Department of Transportation said Friday.
Equipped with 18 sets of mold rings, the MMSP’s fabrication yard in Baliuag, Bulacan, is now capable of producing at least 1,586 tunnel rings, ensuring a steady supply of segments to support the project’s construction timeline.
The yard, covering about 86,650 square meters, began development on Oct. 7, 2023, and became fully operational by Sept. 2, 2024.
“The transportation of said fabricated tunnel segments from the Baliuag Yard to the Contract Package 103 [CP103] construction site, the contract package that houses Camp Aguinaldo and Anonas stations, is scheduled for December 2024,” the DOTr said.
The agency said the start of tunneling works would mark a significant milestone in the development of the project.
The ongoing efforts at the Camp Aguinaldo Station and the operational Fabrication Yard highlight the project’s forward momentum, keeping it on track toward completion within the targeted timelines, it said.
CP103, covering the civil works for Anonas and Camp Aguinaldo stations and viaduct segments, was awarded to Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corp. Ltd. (SMCC) on Sept. 27, 2022.
“Following the commencement of works on May 1, 2023, significant progress has been made on CP103, particularly at Camp Aguinaldo Station. Construction at this key station has advanced to the Basement 3 Level [platform level], marking a critical phase in the development of the Metro Manila Subway Project,” the DOTr said.
The subway project has a route length of 33.1 kilometers from Valenzuela City to Paranaque City, with a connection to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and interoperability services with the southern Metro Manila and Laguna stations of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR).
Once completed, travel time from Valenzuela to Pasay City will be reduced from more than 1.5 hours to 45 minutes.
