Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Monday said that extrajudicial killings (EJK) will not be part of his anti-illegal drugs campaign.
“Number one, EJK is not part of it,” Remulla said in a press conference when asked about his directive to the Philippine National Police (PNP) regarding the government’s fight against illegal drugs.
He also wanted the police to address the supply aspect of illegal drugs aside from the demand.
“Number two, the PNP has done very well on the demand side. Drug cases are up. They have seized record number of drugs in terms of gross amount in the last two years,” he said.
“But we have to concentrate also on the supply side. I think the supply side and the demand side have to be tackled at the same time,” he added.
The House of Representatives Quad Committee is currently conducting hearings into alleged EJKs.
House QuadComm co-chair and Manila 6th District Representative Benny Abante said that former President Rodrigo Duterte as well as former PNP chief and now Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa may soon be asked to face the committee.
Government records showed that at least 6,200 drug suspects have been killed in police operations from June 2016 until November 2021.
Several human rights groups, however, claimed the actual death toll could be from 12,000 to 30,000.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
