The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) instructed the country’s telecommunication companies on Thursday to maintain uninterrupted service in light of Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami).

In a memorandum order, the NTC instructed public telecommunication entities (PTEs) to provide sufficient personnel, standby generators with extra fuel, necessary tools and spare equipment in the areas to be affected by Typhoon Kristine.

“PTEs were also mandated to ensure quick repair and restoration of services in the event of disruptions brought about by the Typhoon,” NTC said.

“In addition, the PTEs were tasked to immediately activate the Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging Stations in areas that will be affected,” it added.

As of October 23, 2024, telecommunication services experienced significant outages in the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas due to power interruptions. Minor outages were also reported in CALABARZON and Northern Luzon.

Globe Telecom reported service outages ranging from 75 percent to 92 percent in Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Camarines Norte.

Smart Communications faced challenges due to severe flooding in the Bicol Region. Converge also experienced disruptions in various regions.

As of October 23, Globe reported partial restoration in Leyte and Southern Leyte, while Converge achieved 32 percent restoration of affected areas.

Telecommunication companies have deployed personnel to affected areas for swift repairs. Restoration efforts are ongoing where conditions permit.

SpaceX Starlink has offered to provide Starlink internet services to Filipino first responders for rescue and relief operations.

The NTC is closely monitoring the situation and working with telecommunication companies to restore services as quickly as possible, ensuring affected individuals can stay connected with loved ones during this difficult time.
