In celebration of Elderly Filipino Week this October, Senior Citizens party-list Rep. Rodolfo ‘Ompong’ Ordanes acknowledged the vital contributions of senior citizens to the Philippines’ development and their influence on guiding younger generations.

This year’s theme, “Senior Citizen: Building the Nation, Inspiring Generations,” highlights the significant role of the elderly in shaping society.

“It is only fitting that we recognize, celebrate, and honor every senior citizen for being the pillars of our communities and society,” Ordanes said in a statement.

The lawmaker reiterated his commitment to championing the rights and welfare of senior citizens through essential services, programs, and legislative initiatives.

He recalled key achievements, including the establishment of the National Commission of Senior Citizens during the 17th Congress, and his successful push to raise the monthly pension for indigent seniors from P500 to P1,000 during the 18th Congress.

In the 19th Congress, Ordanes continues to advocate for senior citizens. He helped push for the passage of Republic Act 11982, which grants P10,000 to individuals upon reaching the ages of 80, 85, 90, and 95.

Additionally, the House of Representatives passed a bill proposing a ‘universal social pension’ for all senior citizens, regardless of financial status.

Ordanes is also urging the Senate to pass several critical bills, including the Early Voting Act, the Comprehensive Senior Citizen Welfare Act, the National Geriatric Health Act, and the Senior Citizens Protection Against Fraud Act. Other proposals include enhancing discounts for seniors and persons with disabilities, as well as supporting the E-Gov PH Super App Act to streamline services.

“These measures aim to ensure the health, happiness, and well-being of our beloved senior citizens. The Senior Citizens Party-list will continue working tirelessly to protect and support our elders,” Ordanes said.
