Philippine telecommunications giant PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit, Smart Communications, have expanded their network in Cebu, enhancing connectivity and boosting local tourism and economic activities in the province.

One area benefiting from the recent network expansion is Aloguinsan, where improved connectivity has supported tourism and small businesses. The municipality, known for its ecotourism, has seen a positive impact on local initiatives.

“We continue to invest in enhancing our integrated fixed and wireless networks across the country to keep families connected, enable livelihoods, and boost the government’s digitalization drive,” said Roderick S. Santiago, PLDT and Smart’s Deputy Network Head.

The network expansion across Cebu serves as part of the telco’s efforts in improving internet access in rural areas

Rudney Carcuevas, President of the Bojo Aloguinsan Ecotourism Association (BAETAS), a longtime partner of Smart, highlighted the benefits of better connectivity. “We used to hike to higher ground for signal. Now, managing bookings is easier, and mobile payments are accessible,” Carcuevas said.

BAETAS oversees the Bojo River, a United Nations-recognized ecotourism destination. Since the installation of Smart’s cell site, complaints about poor communication have significantly dropped.

Smart’s network expansion across Cebu is part of its ongoing efforts to improve internet access in rural areas, helping bridge the digital divide and bringing more communities online.

The PLDT Group’s investments align with its commitment to democratize access to technology and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
