San Pedro City, Laguna—Councilors Iryne Vierneza and Marion Acierto officially assumed their seats in the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday following an en banc decision by the Supreme Court.
The two councilors have been attending council sessions and actively serving their constituents for over two years despite not being formally recognized in their elected positions.
Their long-awaited recognition comes after a rigorous legal battle spearheaded by lawyer Melvin Matibag and his wife, San Pedro City Rep. Ann Matibag, who played a pivotal role in advocating for their rightful places in the council against resistance from the current administration.
Both councilors attended the October 15 Regular Session, seated together at the council table, a symbol of their perseverance. The session was conducted with the understanding that it is now up to Vice Mayor Ina Olivarez to extend formal access to the Session Hall.
Speaking exclusively to The Manila Standard, Vierneza thanked Mr. and Mrs. Matibag for their unwavering support.
“I am thankful that I will finally be able to function in my official capacity. It has been a long journey, but my commitment to serving the people of San Pedro City remains steadfast,” Vierneza said. “Today marks a new chapter not just for me, but for the constituents who have rallied behind us.”
Meanwhile, Acierto reflected on her commitment to her community throughout her unofficial term, emphasizing her dedication to education.
“Even as an ‘unofficial’ City Councilor, I ensured that my commitment to education remained intact, helping around 400 high school and college scholars pursue their dreams,” she said.
Rep. Matibag also weighed in on the historic moment for the San Pedro City Council, stating, “The struggles we faced are finally bearing fruit thanks to the efforts of Atty. Matibag in advocating for what is rightfully deserved by these two councilors.”
This moment reignited hope within the San Pedro City community, showcasing the resilience and determination of its leaders in navigating legal challenges for the sake of public service. As both councilors embark on their official duties, they bring with them a renewed commitment to foster positive change and development within the city.
