MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte said she was ready to be “dragged into hell” amid alleged moves to remove her from office as she accused President Ferdinand Marcos of being incapable of leading the country.
At the same time, Duterte said she did not regret running for vice president in the 2022 elections despite being egged on by her supporters to seek the presidency.
“I don’t regret running for vice president. Imagine, I was mayor [of Davao] and now they are chasing after me. It would have been easier for them to suspend or charge me or remove me as mayor. Now they could not remove me from office. They can drag me to hell. And even when I am there, I will still be president of hell,” said Duterte in a mix of English and Filipino during a press conference in her office in Mandaluyong City on Friday.
Duterte also said that it was not her fault that the President was not capable of running a government. “It isn’t my fault that the one who is sitting down does not know how to be president. Is that my fault? No… I said early that I would not run for president. There were a lot of negatives on my list,” said Duterte when asked if she should have run for president instead.
Duterte’s comments come after President Marcos told reporters during the Asean Summit that he thought he was “deceived and dismayed” by Duterte as he thought they were friends. Duterte resigned from the Cabinet as Education secretary after a falling out with Marcos following his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos’ tirades against the vice president whom she accused of being unable to defend her husband against her father and brother.
