Cosplayer and online DJ Debbie Lopez has finally launched her debut single, a Visayan song titled “Ang Higugmaon Ka.” Composed by Bryan Balucan, it is a love song about secret love, hoping for reciprocation.
“The title translates to ‘Ang Mahalin Ka’ in Tagalog. We want this song’s message of love accessible to a wider audience,” she said.
“I wanted to release a Visayan song as my tribute to my roots,” she told Manila Standard Entertainment during the launch of the single at Mellow D in Quezon City, where she gave a live vocal performance.
Originally from the Visayas and now based in Baguio, Debbie has been passionate about music from a young age. When she was just four years old, her family was visiting Jamaica, and that’s when her musical journey began. Recognizing her potential, Debbie’s mother enrolled her in an international music school.
With her uncle, Dr. Noni Espina, an internationally renowned musician, having a significant impact on her career, music seems to run in the family.
“At first, it was my parents’ dream for me to be a singer, but as time went by, I started falling in love with singing, and I think that’s when my passion for it really started,” Debbie added.
In addition to being a singer, cosplayer, and DJ, Debbie is also interested in entering showbiz. She expressed her desire to work with her celebrity crush, JM de Guzman, with whom she exchanged text messages. He brightened her day when he expressed his desire to meet her in a birthday message.
“Tsaka nung Valentine’s Day, nagsabi ng ‘I love you,’” she shared. “Pero nag-text kami once lang. Alam niya papasok ako [ng] showbiz. Alam niya rin [yung] launching. Sinabi ko celebrity crush ko siya, tapos nalaman ko na lang sila na.”
Knowing that JM is now in a relationship with Donnalyn Bartolome, Debbie said she is considering pairing up with another musician who is single.
“Si Rico Blanco, kasi may Donnalyn na si JM,” she said in jest.
