Following the backlash from actress-singer Julie Anne San Jose’s recent performance at the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Shrine in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, Sparkle GMA Artist Center has spoken up about the issue.
In a statement shared on social media, the talent management agency took responsibility for San Jose’s performance and apologized to those who had been offended by it, further acknowledging that it was the management’s responsibility to coordinate with the organizers and relay the instructions to their artists.
“Julie Anne only fulfilled her duties and commitment as a true professional. She is a devout Catholic and had no intention of disrespecting the Church or its members,” the statement read.
San Jose’s controversial performance, which was for the benefit of the parish’s “Harana para kay Maria” concert, included her singing songs such as Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory,” ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” and Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” While the songs were approved by the organizers, netizens deemed them inappropriate for the event held inside the parish.
Following the controversy, San Jose also issued an apology on her Instagram story, promising that the incident would not happen again.
