Isn’t it amazing how the fascination for K-dramas has whet the appetite for Korean cuisine globally? There is more interest in this country’s fine and wonderful fare, thanks in part to the Hallyu Wave. With this in mind, Conrad Manila presents an exciting way to enjoy Korean food this October.
As part of the luxury hotel’s Legendary Chefs series, Conrad Manila has invited two master chefs from its sister property, Conrad Seoul, to treat diners and Korean culture and food aficionados to traditional and innovative Korean fare. Guest chefs Younghun Hwang and Junmok Lee have taken over the kitchen of Brasserie on 3 until Oct. 13, preparing Korean food we all love, as well as dishes with a twist, for lunch and dinner, at the all-day buffet restaurant.
At a ribbon-cutting to mark the opening of the latest Legendary series were Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-wa and his wife Madame Lee Eunhwa, Ambassador of the Philippines to Korea Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega, Atty. Johnny Chua from the office of the Pasay City mayor, Fabio Berto of Conrad Manila, and the two guest chefs.
Fabio Berto, general manager of Conrad Manila, shared, “Many Filipinos are fascinated with Korea’s culture and food. This weeklong kitchen takeover by chef Younghun and chef Junmok, our colleagues from Conrad Seoul, will definitely treat our guests to their unique creations and fresh takes on some of the favorite ‘K-dishes’ in the country. I invite you all to join us in this extraordinary culinary experience and fall even more in love with Korean delicacies.”
Must-try dishes include: yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), sundubujjigae (soft tofu in spicy stew), bibimbap (steamed rice bowl with vegetables), dakbokkumtang (braised spicy chicken stew), and ganjang sawoojang (soy sauce-marinated raw prawn).
Delightfully, well-loved Korean street food is offered as well. The roster includes tteokbokki (rice cake, fish cake with red chili sauce), eomuk (fish cake with soup), dakgangjeong (fried chicken with sweet chili sauce), and gimbap (rice rolled with various vegetables). My personal favorites are the kalbi (Korean shortribs) and, of course, the patbingsu with red bean and an assortment of fruits.
Aside from the many delicious dishes, Chefs Hwang and Lee showed us how they make seunggiaktang (steamed fish with vegetables). According to Chef Hwang, “I don’t want to insist on purely Korean food. I want to use Filipino ingredients as well to make Korean food. I like the seafood and vegetables here. Actually, there is no grouper fish in Korea, but for the seunggiaktang, I used your local grouper.”
Chef Lee, who is on his first trip to the country, said he was happy to offer Korean food to Filipinos, describing it as “very good.”
Though Korean fare is the highlight of the buffet spread, the good old favorites remain, such as roast beef, and other continental fare.
You can indulge in this delectable Korean-themed buffet spread at Brasserie on 3 for lunch (12 noon – 2:30 p.m.) and dinner (6 – 10 pm), available daily. The lunch buffet from Monday to Saturday is priced at P2,900 nett per person and P3,400 nett per person on Sunday. Meanwhile, dinner buffet rates are P3,200 nett from Monday to Thursday and P3,600 nett from Friday to Sunday.
