MANILA, Philippines — Zamboanga City journalist Ma. Vilma Rodriguez was shot dead by riders in the city on Tuesday night, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said on Wednesday.
The 56-year-old Rodriguez, who worked for radio station e-Media in Zamboanga City, was sitting at a store near her house when she was shot.
She sustained three gunshot wounds but was able to walk home to inform her daughter about the incident.
Rodriguez was declared dead at 9:37 p.m. on Tuesday by attending doctors at the Zamboanga City Medical Center.
The Zamboanga chapter of the NUJP said it condemned the incident, as she was the second female journalist murdered in the city, after Gloria Martin, who was killed in 1992. She worked for radio station DXXX in Basilan.
“We are urging the Zamboanga City Police Office to probe deeper into this, unmask the killers and their masterminds, and put them behind bars. We don’t need a tale of another unsolved case that ended up as archives or statistics,” the NUJP-Zamboanga City said in a statement.
E-Media radio announcer Rey Bayoging announced her passing on air on Wednesday. She was last on air on Tuesday, hours before her murder.
