FOUR Filipinos made it to the finalists for the Seafarer of the Year Award, one of the six industry categories of the 2024 Crew Connect Global Awards.
Crew Connect is the world’s biggest manning conference. It has continuously been held in the Philippines since 1998, a testimony of the country’s significance and status as the seafaring capital of the world.
This year, it will be held from Nov. 12 to 14, 2024, at Shangri-La The Fort, Taguig.

Informa Markets, organizer of Seatrade Maritime Crew Connect Global, announced the shortlist of finalists to include Capt. Ruben Magallanes, 2/O Abigal Chin-Sood, 3/O Majella Angelie Albances, and 3/E Ian John Obapial. The fifth finalist is Iranian, 2/E Mahdi Pakzad.
A lineup of maritime movers and shakers were also identified as finalists for five other industry categories, each focusing on specific elements of improving the lives and careers of seafarers.
The finalists are Innovation and Adoption of Technology Award: 90POE, OSM Thome, Bigyellowfish Technologies, Bound4blue and MarinePALS; Environmental Champion Award: V.ERDE and Berge Bulk; Health and Wellbeing at Sea Award: IMEQ Center, 88 Aces, BW Group, Maritime & Healthcare Group, and MedSea; Industry Partner Award: Ocean Technologies Group, OSM Thome, Philcamsat, Onboard Maritime and V.Care; and Training and Safety at Sea Award: Blue Orange Wave, Philcamsat, Berge Bulk, Vikand and MarinePALS.
Two more awards — selected by the Seatrade Maritime editorial team — will be revealed on the night for Lifetime Achievement and Personality of the Year.
Chris Morley, group director at Seatrade Maritime and organizers of Seatrade Maritime Crew Connect Global, said the record number of entries “illustrates well how significant these are within the industry and the prestige that is held around them for winners.”
“The judging panel had a tough task — the entries were all excellent — but through a transparent and robust evaluation process, we have found our six winners. While each category was different, each focused on specific elements of improving the lives and careers of seafarers — which is ultimately what these last few days have been about, to bring together the industry for common causes,” he added.
The finalists were identified following a rigorous selection process by an independent panel of international judges, which includes Ben Bailey, director of program at The Mission to Seafarers; Fabrizio Barcellona, maritime coordinator at International Transport Workers’ Federation and executive board member of World Maritime University (WMU); Francesco Gargiulo, chief executive officer of IMEC; Simon Grainge, chief executive of International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (Iswan); and Andreas Nordseth, director general of Danish Maritime Authority (DMA).
The winners will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 14, as part of the Seatrade Maritime Crew Connect Global conference.
