(UPDATE) AT least five police officers sustained injuries when anti-riot police clashed with members of militant groups during a Bonifacio Day protest on Saturday on Recto Avenue in Manila.
The altercation occurred as authorities blocked protesters from marching toward Mendiola, a historically symbolic site for rallies and demonstrations.
Maj. Philip Ines, spokesman for the Manila Police District (MPD), said law enforcement was considering legal action against the protesters involved.

“While we respect the right to free speech and expression, Mendiola is not designated as a Freedom Park, and demonstrations are not allowed in that area,” he said.
The injured officers are receiving medical care while the MPD reviews the incident to determine responsibility for the violence.
Protesters gathered to mark Bonifacio Day, an annual event commemorating the legacy of Gat Andres Bonifacio, a Filipino revolutionary hero. The groups voiced opposition to various government policies, though specific grievances raised during the rally were not immediately disclosed.
The clash erupted when anti-riot police blocked the protesters heading to Mendiola, a location often associated with political activism but recently off-limits to protest actions.
Authorities have reiterated their stance on maintaining peace during demonstrations.
“We call for peaceful and lawful protests to ensure public safety,” Ines said. Law enforcement emphasized the importance of compliance with designated protest zones, such as freedom parks, to avoid similar incidents.
As of this writing, the militant groups involved in the protest action have yet to release a statement regarding the incident. Witnesses said that tension arose when demonstrators attempted to breach police lines, leading to the confrontation.
Mendiola has long been a focal point for protests due to its proximity to Malacañan Palace. Despite its historical role as a site for freedom of expression, recent policies have restricted demonstrations in the area to prioritize security and order.
